The Cathedral of St. John the Divine under construction, showing the eastern great arch and the Chapel of St. Saviour.

In this early photograph (ca. 1925), one can still observe the semi-dome of the apse as originally designed by Heins and La Farge. This semi-dome was later redesigned to harmonize more plainly with the increasingly Gothic style of the cathedral.

This longitudinal section exemplifies the contrast that Heins and La Farge envisioned between the cathedral's interior (with its Byzantine-style domes) and its exterior (with its angular Gothic spires). Round arches were to be employed throughout.

This ground plan was published as part of Heins and La Farge's "Competitive Design." Note the relatively modest length of the nave in proportion to other parts of the cathedral.

The nave as envisioned by Ralph Adams Cram in his 1913 sequence of published plates "Design Proposed for the Completion of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York."
